Morris’ shoe hung over the ant like a clumsy bird as he tried to steady his feet. Finally steadying his feet, Morris’s foot pressed down on the ground and crushed the ant, spewing blood onto the sandy floor. Morris, smiling as if he won a trophy, trotted toward the forest adjacent to the beach resort he was at. As Morris trotted away, the ant feebly scurried out of the sand and back into its hill.
In the forest, Morris walked around looking for creatures, examined the ground, and stepped on helpless creatures. Looking around for more creatures, Morris spotted a snake menacingly staring into a bush. As Morris inched closer, he made out that the snake wasn’t staring at a bush but was rather staring at a poor, helpless chameleon named Randall. Almost feeling some newfound empathy for animals, Morris scooped it out of the owl’s reach. Morris squeezed Randall as if it were a stress ball. Morris saw that Randall was missing one of its front legs which wouldn’t make it able to climb without indents already made for him in the wall
Randall squirmed in Morris’ tight grip. He deemed his newly captured chameleon as his pet. It looked famished as if it hadn’t eaten in three days; Morris noticed this and scoffed,
“You think I’m going to waste precious food on you?!”
Randall squirmed even more violently in Morris’ hand almost as if to detest Morris’s decision to not feed him.
At home, Morris took Randall and plopped him into a small dirt pit in his front yard. He grinned menacingly as Randall futilely attempted to run out of its enclosure.
In the middle of the night, Randall planned on escaping his hole and getting back to his family. The second Morris went to sleep, Randall tried with all his might to clamber up and out of the hole but because of his impediment, his legs couldn’t grasp onto the smooth walls of the hole. Throughout the night, Randall tried to climb up the wall but every single time he tried, he would plummet to the ground.
In the morning, Randall was exhausted and had no energy so he decided to sleep. Morris glanced around the dirt pit Randall was in. Putting two and two together, Morris figured out that Randall had tried to escape. Irate that Randall had even tried to escape, Morris made the sadistic decision to squeeze Randall until he was satisfied. In lots of pain, woken from his daze, Randall squirmed and wiggled in Martin’ s hand.
Still angry at Randall, Morris refused to even give Randall a bite of an insect or a bite of a fruit. . Randall, ravished, felt lethargic and lazy instead of his usual energetic and active self. Randall knew he had to make his move to leave the hole now as he didn’t know when Martin would feed him next.
To escape, Randall made ridges in the wall to fit his legs in. Slowly but surely, he pushed himself up to the top of the hole using the recesses he had made in the wall. Randall praised himself and pushed forward. Suddenly, Randall heard the door open. Randall, thinking fast, jumped back into his hole he was kept in and ran around the hole t in the wall. Morris looked to see if Randall was there. The dancing chameleon greeted Morris as he was taken aback at Randall’s energy despite him not feeding it anything.
This obscure sight successfully distracted Morris from seeing the ridges in the wall which would allow Randall to safely climb up the wall. Morris walked away from the enclosure without saying a word. Randall internally celebrated as he had successfully evaded getting squeezed by Morris.
The sun began to set and Randall knew he had to make his move. It was now or never; Morris was in a deep sleep making loud snoring noises and the ridges he had made in the wall would allow him to scale the walls of the hole fast. Climbing up the walls as fast as a cat, Randall escaped out of the hole and onto the lush green grass. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain then a burning sensation throughout his foot. As he looked down, he realized that a fire ant colony laid beneath his feet. Randall ran for his life to get as far away from the ant colony as possible.
While running, Randall spotted an angry Morris coming after him. Morris sprinted towards Randall; Randall knew he would have to react fast. Randall changed his route toward the ant hill and Morris followed him. Morris, sprinting toward Randall without looking down, stepped on the ant hill. Angry fire ants poured out of the hill and the ones attacking Randall now started attacking Morris. Within 5 seconds, his two legs looked like red balloons and his cheeks were swollen. The ants didn’t stop assaulting Morris until every inch of his visible skin was bitten, swollen and red. Morris screamed while trying to get the ants off of him with his hands but it seemed like every time Morris would attempt to get one ant off, two more would be biting him in the same area. Randall watched this go down with pleasure as he chuckled and thought to himself, I may not have as many legs as him but I definitely have a better brain than him.
Randall scurried out of Morris’ reach. Once Morris regained his senses, the chameleon retreated back into the forest where he reunited with family and friends.
“Where have you been all this time?” his chameleon wife chirped.
“Some stupid human kidnapped me, and I escaped because of his stupidity!” Randall retorted.
That night, Randall enjoyed a luxurious feast of crickets and plants with his family and friends, calming his pangs of hunger that he had had for the last three days. Randall made sure that no human would even capture him again by keeping himself deep in the forest.
