“CrEAak”
Sarah wakes up with a jolt.
“What was that?” She asks Kiara who was also awakened by the noise.
“I don’t know but we should go back to sleep,” says Kiara.
“No I think we should check it out first” says Sarah.
“Sarah it’s 3 am and we are in a wood cabin-there are going to be creaky boards. It’s probably just someone using the bathroom.” Kiara snaps back.
“creAaK
“Ok well I am going to check it out,” Sarah responds.
“Ugh you know I have to come,” Kiara says as she slips out of bed to follow Sarah. They knock on the bathroom door only to find that no one is using it.
“CrEaAk”
“Kiara this is starting to worry me” Sarah says.
“We should just find out what it is and go back to sleep” Kiara responds. They slowly walk to the pitch-black staircase and try to see if anyone is downstairs getting a midnight snack or anything that would explain the weird noise.
“cReaAk”
“It’s coming from downstairs,” Sarah said as she placed her foot on the first step of the staircase.
“Shouldn’t we get a parent?” Kiara responded nervously.
“No we should check it out first and if it’s something bad, then we will get my dad,” Sarah says as she takes another step down the stairs.
“Ugh fine” Kiara responds, annoyed.
They slowly tip-toed down the stairs being careful to stay quiet.
“CREak”
“There it is again,” Kiara says as they peer around the wall between the front hall and the kitchen.
“Shhhh be quiet” Sarah says as she enters the kitchen and opens the fridge.
“Sarah we didn’t come down to get a snack-” Something grabs Kiara’s arm and quickly pulls her into a room that she didn’t know existed in the house. Sarah turns around only to find Kiara…gone.
“Kiara?” Sarah whispers loudly. “Come on Kiara don’t prank me,” Sarah says again a bit more nervously.

Kiara can’t see a thing and when she tries to scream she realizes her voice is…gone. She frantically looks around the room as her eyes slowly adjust to the almost pitch black. A shudder goes down her back as she sees a tall figure standing 5 or 6 feet in front of her staring right at her. And then she sees nothing at all, only the feeling of a cold bony hand on her shoulder. Sarah runs up the stairs as fast as she can and bursts into her parents’ room. They both wake up and she explains to them that Kiara is missing. Her mom goes to wake up Kiara’s parents and her dad grabs a baseball bat that was in the hall closet. Her dad checks every door downstairs to find all of them empty. He even checks outside and in the garage. Kiara’s parents are freaking out and Sarah is super worried and confused. That is until Sarah realizes there is an uneven spot on the floor underneath the carpet in the living room. She shows her dad who lifts the carpet to reveal a trap door right in the middle of the living room. He tries to open it however it’s locked. Kiara tries screaming again-no luck and it seems as if hope is being sucked out of her. The owner of the cold hand seemed to still be in the room, just not right next to her anymore. She felt like she should be more afraid however it was almost like she didn’t care. It was a weird feeling…a feeling that you had no feelings at all. Kiara didn’t know. That’s when she heard a bang.

Sarah’s dad hit the handle of the trap door with the baseball bat once- “BOOM”-twice-“BOOM”. It finally broke and he pulled on the door with all his might however it still didn’t open. Her dad had only broken the handle and not the lock.
“We have to find another way in!” Kiara’s mom shouted as tears streamed down her face. That’s when Kiara’s dad (who at least looked weaker than Sarah’s dad) took the baseball bat and bashed right through the wooden door on the floor.

Kiara felt a cold whoosh of air and immediately started to panic again. She tried screaming and it worked! Almost too well because at that moment her dad jumped down into the room she was in and immediately snatched her up into a hug.
“Kiara are you ok?!” her dad said.
“Yes Dad I’m fine but we need to leave,” Kiara said. “We’re not the only people in this cabin…or maybe we are. Let’s just get out of here.”
“I’m so happy you’re okay but, what happened?” her dad questioned.
“I’ll tell you as soon as we’re leaving,” Kiara responded.

At this point, it was around 4:30 a.m. and it was still dark outside as they very quickly packed up their stuff and loaded into the car. When Kiara’s dad started driving Kiara started to tell her story. Everyone in the car was completely freaked out and had a lot of questions. Kiara tried to answer them but didn’t know much about the “creature” herself. Right before they pulled out of the long driveway Kiara could have sworn she saw a figure in the snow. The figure had her index finger in front of her lips signalling the word “hush”. She decided that whatever it was couldn’t get her anymore and she wanted to just forget about the whole thing. Kiara and Sarah slept the whole way back to their homes and that night Kiara’s dad called the realtor and told them that the cabin should be investigated immediately. Kiara and Sarah spent weeks trying to figure out what could’ve been in the cabin. A haunting ghost? A weird old lady? A revenging spirit? They didn’t know. But they also knew they would never find out. Sarah and Kiara continued to stay best friends and promised each other to never stay in a snowy cabin in the woods ever again.
