I was 18 years old when I signed the contract with Lucifer. I needed something better than the scrappy life I was living. You might call me greedy but when you can go from having nothing to having an unlimited amount of money, you would sign the paper too. Soul or not I was still a person. Yes I was at his beckon call, but life was normal. (Well almost) Little did I know ten years later he would be giving it back.
It was a Saturday. I got up as normal at 6am. The blaring alarm scared me awake. I wasn’t allowed to have a normal job. I was allowed to be Lucifer’s human on earth. I checked my phone for a text from him with my next assignment, but I only had a scam text message. Having a minute of freedom was nice, if it only was a minute. I never knew how long I would have in between assignments. Sometimes a day, sometimes a week, and sometimes even minutes. I was delighted to have some time to myself. It was time for a shopping spree. I hurily got dressed and grabbed my wallet and my phone. As my hand touched the door I realized I didn’t actually need anything. All the clothes I had bought were filling up my 8 closets. But need wasn’t a thing anymore. I only had want. I shook my head and hurried down the stairs of my mansion when my phone buzzed. Great. I quickly pulled my phone out and read the text, “I’m coming to the over world today. I need a favor.”
Shock rushed through my body. What favor would Lucifer himself want? I flew up the stairs and back into my room. I shot a text to the maid telling her to clean the house. It had been ten years since I last saw him. I would just have to wait and find out. The fear soaked my veins and my whole body was shaking. I didn’t leave the spot. I was crouched behind my bed for hours. My eyes didn’t open till the echo of the doorbell rang through the house.
“Mrs. Blare.” My maid Maria’s voice called to me from the entryway. “Mister Lui is here to see you.” I scoffed. How creative of him. Lui made him seem so peaceful. I crept down the stairs to meet him. As I turned the corner of the slick marble stairs there he was. A tall human, almost six feet, with sleek white hair hanging in majestic curls down his back. He had on a formal red dress shirt under his regal black suit. He was different then the last time I had seen him. His face was calmer. I nodded to Maria to leave us be and lead him to the dining room. The candle lit chandelier must have bothered him because with the blink of an eye it was extinguished.
“Why are you here?” I preferred to get right to the point with Lui.
“What, no comment on my human form?” He didn’t.
“Lucifer,” I scolded him.
“Fine Blare. If it’s going to be that way I suppose I should get to the point.”
He waited for me to respond but I knew better.
“Blare, I will give you back your soul if you can do something for me.”
Those words made my jaw drop. Getting my soul back would be a life saver. Literally! But what would I have to do for the King of Hell to break our contract. That’s what scared me. Apparently he could tell.
“Don’t be so scared Blare. I’m not having you start a war.” I was still skeptical of the offer until he said this. “It’s already been approved by the big man. You have to understand that what I’m asking you to do this person deserves. The less you know the better.” I nodded and with a magical red dust ball, a contract appeared. I read every word knowing Lucifer. He handed me a pen with a smile.
I found myself outside an average house in some average neighborhood with a gun in the holster at my side. I couldn’t bring myself to knock on the door, but as I walked away it opened. “Hello?” No one answered me. I didn’t think twice about entering. The hallway was adorned with photos. I felt a pit in my stomach. His face was so happy. This man didn’t deserve to die. He hadn’t done anything wrong. What am I doing? The further into the house the worse I felt. That was until I hit the master bedroom. There was something ominous about the room just standing by the door. When my hand turned the knob I had no idea what my eyes were about to see. On every inch of the wall to the left hung photos. Each photo had but one person in it and none of them were the man from the hall. 35 photos. I counted 35 photos. Each one had a name and an address in the corner. I recognized about 5 names from the news and recent amber alerts. 12 of them were children. One kid looked about to be the age of 5. When I saw that wall I knew I had to do it. I walked to the front door and locked it. I waited. And waited. And waited. It seemed like an hour just standing there by the door with my hand on the trigger. I was so scared of what I was about to do, but it had to be done. This furry inside me scared me more than the man who owned the house. The next few minutes were a blur. I heard the rumbling of a car, the gingling of keys, and the click of the door knob. I let the door open just enough so I could look the man in the eyes. My shaky hand pulled the trigger. Bang!
