I stared out the window. The Spiralton I knew had faded away, it was hardening like the ash of a volcano, all dark, desolate, and gloomy.
“What are we going to do?” Mom said, worriedly.
My younger sisters were way quieter than usual, whimpering and whispering to each other.
“No!” I shouted, “our house!”
Eight hours earlier……
I could feel it in my bones! Today was going to be a great day living in the magical land of Spiralton.
At breakfast, I was just silently slurping my ruby-grain cereal, rolling my eyes at my sisters, and watching my older brother, Mike, constantly practice for his magic exams.
You see, when you are born, you are born with two powers, one from your mom, one from your dad. My siblings and I all have the power of invisibility and enhancing things.
After breakfast I headed to my invisibility practice on the field where my coach…. A teenage girl named Nina was standing.
“I will be on Starlight, my unicorn, constantly galloping alongside you. Starlight will be shooting emerald water out of her horn. Now as you know, emerald water burns your skin, so be careful! You will be turning invisible, so the water shouldn’t reveal you either. You need to be running at top speed.”
Starlight sprayed the murky-green water.
We screamed, laughing at the same time, and turned invisible.
I was laughing so hard, I ran out of breath as my chocolatey-brown hair flew out behind me.
“I….Need…..Water……” I wheezed.
Still invisible, I cupped my hands and placed them into a pink river flowing by the grass. As I brought the water to my mouth…….
Disaster struck.
The water in my hands had…. vanished. I wasn’t really alarmed now, though, so I reached into the river again to take some more.
When I glanced at the river, my heart skipped a beat. The water was gone.
Quickly, I turned myself visible again, just to be accidentally splashed by the emerald water.
But, abruptly, the water touched my skin…. And disappeared as well.
Now truly alarmed, I breathlessly explained the situation to Nina.
“Go!” Nina said sharply, her hair flying everywhere around her from the wind, “GO!”
“I think the water is drying up everywhere!” Freya said, pointing at all the waterbodies around us.
Then it all struck me. Everything that was alive by water was hardening into black stone!
Trees, plants, and everything around me that contained water was slowly transforming. Freya understood what I was thinking and said, “Angelina! Even we are powered by water!”
I gasped to see my elbow darkening.
Once I reached home, I gestured outside the door to my family.
“We know,” Mom said, “let me explain.”
“So…You know how our island controls all four elements; air, water, fire, and earth, by the Keepers of the Elements?”
“So, all elements are in the form of pillars. The magic of the elements, seasons, and weather, comes from there. Now, unfortunately…” Mom looked out the window and sighed, “the water pillar has just…Broken. This is the sign that the water magic had gotten weak. That means all the water on this island has dried up, and if we don’t leave Spiralton quickly, we’ll all turn to stone.”
I nearly choked on air. This was too much to take in.
The walls were slowly darkening, and as if they were made of cake, they started crumbling down.
Everyone screamed.
“We still forgot to tell you something!” Dad shouted over the howling wind, “we are being transported to the human realm!”
“What?” I screamed, exasperated, “but…”
“WE WILL TURN TO STONE HERE!!”
As we ran out from my falling-down house, my feet suddenly felt…. Light. Like I was being lifted and placed in the air to gently float.
“WHAT’S HAPPENING?!”
Suddenly, we plopped onto some grass. My entire family surrounded me. There were a couple of other people around us. We were sitting next to a sign, labeled….
Welcome to California.
One year later….
“Watch out! Out of my way please!” I dashed through the hall of students. I had to get to science class before the bell rang!
I sighed. Just on time. “Okay kids…Today we will learn about the water cycle,” my teacher said.
I yawned and dozed off…. Dreaming about Spiralton. Now it was just a huge piece of black stone. The human world was awfully boring. I missed the magic, fun, and excitement!
“Angelina! What is water made from?”
“Huh,” I said, raising my head, “ummmm, I don’t know, sorry.”
“You are in sixth grade! Jennifer, please tell me the answer.”
“Hydrogen and oxygen.”
Suddenly, something struck me. What if I created my own water..What if I could fix Spiralton?
Three hours later……
My family and I were now standing on the big black rock of Spiralton.
“Dad, you can do this,” I said.
My Dad had the power to create anything he wished for.
“So you want me to create Hydrogen and Oxygen? Okay…….”
Everyone stared expectantly at the magic happening. But to our disappointment, we could only create enough water to fill a small cup.
“Wait!” I exclaimed, “Mom, Stella, Sally, Mike, and I all have the power of enhancing things! What if we enhance the quantity of water?”
Mom looked unsure. “Even the five of us can’t create an ocean full of water!”
“We need to try. For Spiralton!”
And…..
We did it.
It took a lot of energy, and we were really exhausted, but we managed to create that small cup of water to a semi-small ocean!
We continued this process for three days, Dad would make the hydrogen and oxygen, and we would turn that into waterbodies.
Soon enough, Spiralton was now filled with lakes, rivers, and a big ocean. All the plants grew back, and it was good as new.
We called everyone back and resumed our way of life. I was so happy. With a little science and a little magic, my family and I had saved the day!
