Jane woke up from a long, restless night. She was on her filthy, cold bed at the orphanage she lived at. There at the orphanage, life was difficult and hard. They were fed once a day and were told to never go outside. She was 6 years old and had short, silky, dark brown hair, which was always tied up in pigtails or braids. She sat up, yawned, and rubbed her eyes. She grabbed her teddy bear and went to go fetch her clothes. The hardwood floor creaked and bent as she walked across it. Once she got to her wardrobe, she opened the door and got her clothes. She changed and put her worn out old shoes on. Jane realized something.
“Why is it so quiet, Mr. Teddy Bear?” she said.
“Normally it’s so loud and people are running down the hallways,” Jane said in a low voice trying to imitate her teddy bear. Jane was confused why it was quiet. She went over to her door and opened it. She poked her head out and looked from side to side. Nobody was in the hallway. She walked out of her room and ran down the stairs. She then headed to the dining room. Still nobody was there. There should have been people eating breakfast by now she thought. She checked everywhere she thought people could be but she didn’t find anyone.
“I’m all alone?” she cried, hugging her fluffy brown teddy bear tight. She wondered what had happened. Where was everyone? Why did they forget her? Jane was crying at this point, clear, hot tears streaming down her face. She was all alone; she had nobody except Mr. Teddy Bear. She suddenly stopped.
“Mr. Teddy Bear, I’m starting to get hungry; what should we do?” Jane asked.
“I can help you cook some eggs. I’ve never cooked eggs but let’s see what happens.” Jane acted out Mr. Teddy Bear. They went down into the kitchen and got a carton of eggs from the fridge.
“I need to be careful I don’t drop these!” Jane said as she put them on the counter next to the stove.
“Now I need to find a pan… Oh! There’s one!” Jane put it on the stove and grabbed a step stool. She then proceeded to crack eggs one by one until she had two on the pan. The slimy nature of the uncooked eggs grossed her out a bit. She remembered her caretaker, Miss Cassy, showed her how to cook eggs, so she turned on the stove and went to work. Just like that she had some eggs, ate them, and went to look around.
She found a narrow, steep staircase leading to a door. She stumbled down the stairs and looked at the door. It seemed like an old, rusty door she had never seen before. Jane tried to open the door but it seemed locked but she had an idea where to look for the key. When she was little she saw the caretakers put their keys in a specific drawer in the kitchen. Jane thought the key might be in there. She hurried into the kitchen and opened the drawer. She saw only one key so she grabbed it and ran back down to the door. She put the key in the keyhole and turned the key. It unlocked and she was in! Jane excitedly opened the door and found another staircase. But this one was different. It had a dark aura Jane didn’t like. It was a dark staircase with a weird scent and peeling wallpaper. She slowly walked down the stairs into a normal looking room. Even though the lights were flickering, it should be a normal basement. Or is it? Jane looked around even though she was a bit frightened. Everything looked normal. A few boxes and some bins.
“Nothing out of the ordinary here,” Jane said. Jane then found a tiny door just her size behind some empty boxes. No normal adult or teenager could fit in there. She half-heartedly opened the door, went through it, and then screamed.
“AAHHHH!” Jane exclaimed, “A BODY!”
“But why is a body in this big red circle with candles around it?”
She started walking around the red circle and suddenly, SLAM! She closed her eyes and screamed. She opened one eye and saw nothing.
“…Behind…you…” a creepy voice said. Jane screamed again and still felt the presence of it even though it left. She found a big passage from the room with the body. From a distance she thought she saw a person. But when she got closer she found out it was just a wooden pole. It was in the middle of the room and nothing else was there. It had a picture of a heart drawing and was being stabbed by a thumb tack on the pole. There also was a blood splatter on the floor.
“Ok this is getting weird. I think I should leave.” Jane turned around and noticed a sign that said ‘help me’ written in blood on the wall but she just ignored it. She sprinted past all the weird things she just saw.
“I need to get out of here!”
“Wait, where’s Mr. Teddy Bear?!” She cried. She ran as fast as she could, breathing very hard. She looked everywhere and didn’t find her teddy bear.
“Looking for…. this?” the creepy voice said. She finally got a good look at it. It was a black shadow with red shining eyes.
“Give that back!” Jane exclaimed.
“Oh… too bad,” the figure then suddenly ripped Teddy Bear’s head off. And then it left, dropping the bear on the floor.
“NOOOO!!” Jane cried. She picked up Mr. Teddy Bear, looking at him with tears in her eyes clouding up her vision. She cried as she ran back up the stairs and passed the door leading to the basement. She then ran up the stairs and went to her bedroom and cried until she couldn’t anymore.
