I ran in and curled down in a crater. The ground was hot, and a small fire was burning on an edge of the crater. Shells were falling left and right. Despite all the sounds, I heard footsteps nearby. I looked up and saw a soldier, an enemy soldier. In his hand was a knife. When he saw me, he lifted the knife. I knew I was about to die. You may be wondering how I got to this point, so I will start from the beginning.
My name is Tom, and I live in a small town, which is located on the western side of Russia. I had an ordinary life, a nice family, went to school, and had friends. When I was fifteen, Russia declared war on Germany, and a year later I was drafted to fight on the front lines. I went through training as a gunner on a plane and as an assault soldier and some training as a pilot, so I knew how to fly a bit. After my training came trouble. I was sent out to unit 8 as a part time submachine gunner and a gunner on a plane.
“Todays the big day,” said David, the pilot of the plane that I will be on. “Don’t mess up. ”
“I won’t,” I replied. David stepped into the pilot’s seat, and I went in mine. Since I had training as a submachine gunner, I was armed with a PPSH-41, a Makarov pistol, and a knife. Normally, pilots only get a pistol and a knife, but I was allowed to have a submachine gun, since I had training. The plane started and we were off. In the distance I saw a bunch of planes fighting. As we approached, bullets were flying everywhere. David locked on an enemy plane and started firing. The enemy plane tried to escape.
“A German plane is locked on us,” David cried.
“I got him. You keep chasing the other one,” I replied. I saw the enemy plane, aimed and fired. I kept firing until the plane burst into flames. “Yes, I got him! “ I yelled.
David was concentrated on firing on the other plane. Finally, the German plane burst into flames and came crashing down on the battlefield below us.
“Yes, we did it, “ David exclaimed. The excitement ended when five enemy planes locked on us. David desperately tried to escape, while I was trying to fight all of them off. I managed to get two of them, but there were too many of them. Our plane started burning. “We’re going down!” yelled David.
“Eject out now! ” I pulled the eject lever and was launched up just before the plane exploded. I landed on the ground near a crater, with my PPSH-41 in my hand. That’s when I realized I landed in the worst possible place, right in the middle of the battlefield. Bullets were flying from the left and the right. That’s when I ran into the crater. This is how I ended up in that crater about to get stabbed.
Memories of my life filled my thoughts. Just before the enemy soldier was about to stab me, a shell landed very close to us and the shockwave knocked the knife and the soldier down on the ground. Without a moment to lose, I grabbed my pistol and pointed it at the enemy soldier. I looked into his eyes and realized that he was just as scared as I was, so I decided to just knock him out. I slapped him with my pistol, which did the job. I looked to a nearby crater and saw David lying there. He was injured. I fired around twenty shots and sprinted towards that crater. Bullets hit the ground all around me, one grazed my face. I didn’t stop though. I somehow made it to the crater. David was shot in the leg and in the arm. I saw a dead medic in the crater, so I took some medical supplies from him and started patching David up.
”Stay in this crater, I will defend you,” I said. David just nodded. When I finished patching David, I peaked up. The enemies were advancing. “David, they are advancing, I need to get you back! Can you run?” I asked.
“Yes, I can for a bit,” David replied.
“On three run back to our boys. One, two, and three!” I peaked over the crater and started spraying in every direction. David started running back. When I shot every bullet in the mag, I quickly turned around and saw that David was still running back. It was because of the leg! I started reloading. While I was reloading, the enemies started shooting at me. Even while the enemies were shooting, I kneeled down and started shooting them. A couple of them fell down. But then I felt a sharp pain in my left shoulder. That’s when another round of shelling came. One of them knocked me down. Just before I fainted, I saw David make it to the friendly forces, then I passed out. When I came to, I was buried in a layer of dirt. My gun was broken. The only thing I had was my pistol and my knife. I saw a friendly soldier, and I called out to him, but then I passed out again. When I came to, I was in the hospital. They fixed up my shoulder. David came to visit me. We talked about what happened. David told me that when the shelling came, all the enemies ran off. If it wasn’t for me holding the enemies off so he could run back for that little bit of time, we would have probably lost the battle. I spent the rest of the war recovering from the injuries. When the war ended, I went back home, and was rewarded for my bravery. David and I remained friends and visited each other frequently. And everything went back to normal.
